27 June 1892 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 27th [June 1892]. Merthyr came up to town intending to sleep here but the lawsuit has taken such an unpleasant turn that after a visit to Richard he returned home to Inwood. It appears that her sisters are going to try & revive an old story wh had been maliciously set about before Theo married that she had been too intimate with her groom! What can not family quarrels make people do? It was fine & we set out on the leads & had coffee after lunch & then Kate & I drove off to Whiteleys to see abt an awning to cover the leads & make it shady. We finally ordered one at Haynes wh is to cost abt £10. We all went (us 4) to the R. Academy Exn before luncheon. I had a headache & came home & lay down in my room & had tea. Lady Gregory was out all day finishing her last packing at 3 St Georges Place & left it there for ever. She came here & packed her own trunks & I sat with her while she did so, talking to & cheering her, for now her sad lonely life really begins & she leaves all her former London married life far behind her– I did not go down to dinner. Mrs Henry White & Miss Macmillan dined with Henry, Kate & Augusta & then we 5 went to Covent Garden to hear the opera of Lohengrin & Augusta left by the 8 train for Ireland. She is gone to live at Coole. We heard Mme Nordica in Lohengrin instead of Melba—& Van Dyck instead of Jean de Reszke. She sang well & Van Dyck has a splendid tenor tho’ he has an unpleasant appearance. The house was very full. My brother Monty was there & came to see us & Nellie Alderson was in a stall 2 rows in front of us. My headache got better & I was able to enjoy the evening.
