29 July 1892 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Friday. 29th July [1892]. I woke with a bad headache & so remained in bed & took doses of citrate of Caffeine & was able to get up at 11.30 & Henry & I & Kate & Eda & Nela Du Cane drove off to Uffington wh was 14 miles from Peterboro & we got there about 2. Found my mother staying there and a Mrs & Miss de Capel Brooke & my uncle & Aunt Lord & Lady Lindsey & their youngest girl Lady Evelyn Bertie at home. Eda & Nela went off to lunch with Lord & Lady Bertie who live in the village & we lunched at the House. Afterwards Felicia took Henry & me all round the house & grounds to renew acquaintance with the old place & Henry & I visited the room where he had proposed to me 23 years ago. We went to look at the great old wisteria tree that covers the gardener’s house & is the largest in England. We went to the church which is kept open. We came back to the garden & a few neighbours arrived ostensibly for a lawn tennis party—but no one seemed enclined to play. The Berties brought out 2 girls over. We sauntered about & then had tea– Monty Alderson joined us from the William Welby’s where he was staying & he took Nela home to Peterboro by train. We started for Peterboro abt 5.30 & got there abt 7. Had dinner. Played Halma with Cecil Alderson. Bed early.
