30 July 1892 — Peterborough Minster Precincts, Peterborough, Cambridgeshire
Saturday. 30th July [1892]. Up to 9 o’cl breakfast. Kate & I walked off then to the old furniture shops again & I bought a few small things. Came back & had a great discussion as to their eldest son Augustus’ prospects & whether he should accept Mrs White’s invitation to go out to Australia in search of employment & give up his farm in Canada. Lunch at 1.30 & went off by 3.15 train for London as we expected to have Ct Hatzfeldt to dine with us. Sir A. Otway & 2 Du Cane girls & we were to go down to Lord Selborne’s on Monday. As soon as we reached home I went up to my room to rest have tea & read my letters & found one from Hatzfeldt to say he had been called away to Cannes to meet his Emperor, from the Du Canes to say they were leaving town & from Sophy to say she is laid up with influenza & could not have us on Monday. Bee & Evely Eliot came in to call so we asked them to come & dine & also wrote to beg Ed Ponsonby to come wh they did & Evely played to us on the Violincello after dinner. He plays very well indeed.
