12 August 1892 — Duffryn House, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan
Friday. 12th August [1892]. My brother Augustus’ birthday. He would have been 51 today. Very fine warm day. While I was dressing in the morng Rosa suddenly gave me warning she wished to leave this day month as she found the work too hard for her while we were in Venice! Imagine my astonishment & relief– But she had turned the tables on me with a vengeance. I accepted her decision & told her that as by this day month we should be back in Venice, I wd send her back to Turin to wh she indignantly announced that she would not go to Turin but rather to her old home! Wrote letters, read & work in morng. After lunch we all except Lady Aberdare drove off on an expedition to the hills to a place called where there is a little church wh is built on the site of a very old one & is a favorite burial place. It is on the road between Merthyr & Cardiff. We had a splendid afternoon & took tea baskets & had 5 o’clock tea by the side of a little babbling brook. Some went in a little wagonette—others in the poney carriage & Lily rode a poney. I read aloud to Henry before dinner. Played Halma with Lady Aberdare in the eveng & beat her.
