13 August 1892 — Duffryn House, Mountain Ash, Glamorgan
Saturday. 13th August [1892]. Notwithstanding a fine moonlit night and the splendid sky of yesterday this morng was very wet. However the rain cleared about 11. Wrote some letters worked &c. Lady Aberdare took me into her sanctum to see where she worked. After lunch we played lawn tennis & some played rackets– But there were many showers during the day. Mr Pringle son of a Wilts clergyman learning engineering & living with the miners came up to play tennis. The Aberdares are very kind to him. We had tea in doors as heavy showers came on. Pamela & Lily took me up to sit in their den from tea till dinner time & told me all they are doing amongst the poor here. I recommended them to try & start a “home art” among the young girls here & promised to try to help them– After dinner about 25 Welsh came up & sang welsh glees to us & we enjoyed it immensely. They gave us The Hunting of the Hare, Hob y derri dando, the Men of Harlech, the Lament of & other airs—the words being in Welsh—& most of them had fine voices—the men being nearly all “pit men.” It was a great treat.
