18 August 1892 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Thursday. 18th August [1892]. Breakfast at 9. Went out fishing at the Dr’s hatch under the care of Gregory the fishing keeper & on to the other pools near by but caught nothing. A thunderstorm came on & I got rather wet & came home before 1 o’cl: Lunch at 1.30 & Mr Post returned very wet & also unsuccessful. I read aloud to Henry after lunch & at 4 as it cleared up we all 4 went off in the waggonette to the Mill & fished there. It rained at intervals & Henry & Nellie had to sit under umbrellas in the muddy fields & Nellie made the tea there. It was an amusing sight to see it done in rain & under umbrellas. After tea the trout began to take & I caught 4 fine ones weighing altogether 3½ lbs & just as it got dark I lost my fly & so had to give up & go home to Henry’s delight he being tired of waiting sitting under his umbrella! When we got back to Bere we found Arthur returned from London & hastened to get off wet things & dress for dinner. Played patience under the supervision of Mr Post. Arthur kept us in roars with absurd tales of his boyhood.
