19 August 1892 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Friday. 19th August [1892]. Directly after breakfast I went out fishing with Mr Post. We drove to the Mill again & I went to fish the 2 pools. Mr Post went on to near the Ratcliffe’s house & fished up. I was joined by Gregory & in spite of all my efforts & changing of flies tho the fish were rising nicely I got nothing. The waggonette returned to take us home for luncheon. After lunch we had coffee in the garden & then Nelly & I modelled a bit & at 4 she & Arthur & I went to the Flower & fruit show wh was held in a field close by under a large tent. There I made acquaintance with Mr C. Ratcliffe who is a friend of all my brothers & he walked up with us to Arthur’s house. I & Nelly went on to the Vicarage to tea with Mr Farrer & then back home to tea on our lawn where Arthur & Mr Ratcliffe were discoursing sport. The bells were ringing at intervals. A band was playing in the field– There were swings & cocoa nuts to bowl at for 1d a bowl. Nelly & I had a try & brought home 4 nuts in triumph! After tea I went out to see Arthur fish & there we were joined by Mr Post who had brought 7 nice trout. Then I left Arthur & walked up with Nelly to the higher hatch & had a try but without results & I came home after 8 & hastened to dress for dinner as it was dark & past 8. As I passed the show dancing was going on & lights were lighted. After dinner played patience with Henry & Mr Post to advise & had a very jolly evening.
