20 August 1892 — Bere Cottage, Bere Regis, Dorset
Saturday. 20th August [1892]. Helped Nelly to put up & arrange flowers & pots– Hot morning—no fishing to be done. Went in to Monty’s house to see it again & Nelly & I sat chatting in his high iron drawing room. We went upstairs to look at the window out of which Arthur’s wife Adeline had let herself down in the night by her sheets & escaped since when she has never returned to him. There is a bar across the window & the marvel is how she squeezed thro’ it. She must have been slightly mad. Returned to Arthur’s & lunched at 1.30 & then left him with great regret & drove off to Wareham & took the 3 train to Wimborne to go & stay at Canford. Got there for tea on the lawn. Found the old Dss of Marlboro staying there. Nela Du Cane, Miss Green (the old governess), Henry Guest & Elaine & Francis. I went for a drive with Cornelia. She drove her ponies. We went to the saw pits where the young people were having tea picnic—round by Langham House. Dinner at 8.15. Whist for the elders, a little music & dreary eveng.
