18 September 1892 — Brunnsee Castle, nr. Spielfeld
Sunday. 18th September [1892]. Walked in the garden a little before breakfast. The church is part of the chateau & we could hear the organ & singing from my room– The music slow & solemn & the congregation all join in. Lunch at 12 and at 3 we all drove over to Spielfeld to the Chateau of Baron Brück the present Austrian Ambr at Rome– It is close to the station & very picturesque with 4 towers & the remains of one in the centre. One gets into it by the back & drives into the court yard, there one finds the entrance up steps & an open loggia along one side of the yard, into this all the rooms open. We were received at the foot of the steps by B. & Bss Bruck & their daughters & one of whom is married to a Russian diplomat. We were taken into the dining room & sat solemnly down to gouter & then went round the rooms wh are handsome & nicely filled up. The view from the windows are lovely & one looks over the valley towards the Hungarian frontier. These chateaux were mostly built by Turkish prisoners or had stood various seiges against Turks and are very picturesque. Several other neighbours came to the Brucks and we all repaired to the tennis ground & the young people played. At 6 we set off to drive back to Brunnsee under a sky wh threatened rain but happily it kept off. Supper at 8. Bed at 10.
