25 September 1892 — Spittal
Sunday. 25th September [1892]. Spittal is a pretty little town with a fine palace belonging to the Count Porzia of Milan—nice gardens & one side of the house frescoed– We left by 8.20 train & got to Toblach at 11. Got a little breakfast at the Hotel Ampezzo while our carriage was prepared. We had too much luggage for the carriage so had to take a little cart. The weather seemed somewhat unsettled but after a slight shower or two it got fine. At Schluderbach our driver stopped to water his horses & Ola & I walked on to the top of the pass & pick sprigs of the grey clematis plant wh we found growing up the pines. We left Toblach at 11.45 & reached Cortina at 3.30. Got tea there while Mr Malcolm’s carriage wh met us there was prepared & another cart found for the luggage– At the frontier there was no question of cholera precautions & an old lascia passare we had passed us at once & our luggage wh was a long way behind us. We went a great pace & reached La Punta at 7.30 hungry & glad to be at rest. No one there & we went early to bed.
