14 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 14th [October 1892]. Wrote &c in morning copying out of these journals of mine dates of when we paid visits to Lady Westr as we have promised Merthyr & Theo to come forward as witnesses to prove that the old lady was in her right mind when she made her will in 1881. She certainly was quite clever & alert then & very amusing. The D. of Westr is trying to prevent Theo getting the money her mother left her & the trial will come on next month. Miss Cadogan went out with Mr Colvin. Ola lunched alone & then went to the station to meet Miss Sharp (Maria’s governess) who arrived [from] Florence & is to stay with us. Lord & Lady Kentsford & M. Yriarte lunched with us. The latter is a French man of Spanish (or Basque) origine & has written very interesting books on Venice & Venetian life. He told us he had long been kind of secy to Sir Rd Wallace & had been left nothing by him contrary to his promise but Sir Richard had died before he cd sign his will. He said that Lady Wallace is totally illiterate & stupid & does nothing but smoke large cigars all day. Mr Colvin, Miss Cadogan, Henry & I went off to the Eden’s garden & I brought back a lot of flowers wh Ola & Miss Sharp arranged. Genl de Horsey dined with us– He was gay & pleasant & I helped him to cut his food up as he had lost his left arm– He is also very blind.
