17 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 17th October [1892]. Wrote &c in morng. We always are called at 7 & have our tea brought—get up & drink it & chat while I work. Let Bully out of his cage & he flies about & gets hempseeds. Then at 8 Henry dresses & I practise the guitar till it is time to dress for 9 o’cl breakfast. After lunch I got a note from Ct Seckendorff asking 3 of us to accompany H.M. in the steam launch at 3 o’cl & to bring the tea. We had just time to dress & get the tea baskets & go over. However we all had to wait a little while for the steam launch as it had been not been ordered in time. At last as we were setting off to meet it in gondolas it appeared—& we went. H.M., Princess Margaret, Her fiancé, Baron Knesebeck, Ct Seckendorff, Mr Colvin, Ola & I. We went to S. Niccoletto & landed. Tried to get to the shore but ct not on acct of the forts. It was a splendid afternoon & the mountains all to be seen quite clear & were a magnificent sight. We went back to the landing stage—I got into the boat & prepared tea while the rest walked on to S. Elizabetta & we met them there by wh time the tea was made & we had it on the way back to Venice. There was a splendid red sunset so H.M. begged to go up the Giudecca & back round by the Grand Canal home. We got there abt 6. Found two large boxes of flowers arrived from Vescovana. While Ola rested Miss Sharp & I put them in water & arranged a basketful to take to H.M. when we went to dine, Henry, Mr Colvin, Miss Cadogan, Ola & I. Mr Malcolm was also there. After dinner we arranged the flowers for the Empress. Came home at 10. Tomorrow is the late Emperor’s birthday & as there happens to be early service & communion H.M. said she would go & I offered also to go but as she said nothing I thought I had better not.
