20 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 20th October [1892]. Ola not well & kept her bed. Wrote in morning—copied for Henry. Lunch at 1. Henry, Miss Cadogan & I went out in the steam launch at 2.30. There was thunder all night but it cleared abt 11 A.M. & it was a splendid day. We went to Malamocco, landed there and walked to S. Elizabetta—& to my surprise Henry was able to do it—altho he was pretty tired by the time we got there & had to take my arm. The sea was perfectly calm of a deep blue & we could actually dimly see the shining white cliffs of the coast about Trieste– On the other side of us over Venice the Euganean hills as we walked along the ridge of the shore. We reached S. Elisabetta just as it got dark soon after 5 & got hot water at the inn & made our tea in the launch & drank it as we steamed slowly home. The stars were brilliant & it was much warmer than it had been in the early morning. I read aloud to Henry till dinner. He took out Miss Cadogan in the gondola after dinner & Miss Sharpe & I stayed at home & chatted & I played patience. The Empress was much concerned less Henry should have walked too much & said I am to wave a white handkerchief tomorrow after breakfast as a sign that he was well & had slept well and not to forget or else she should come over herself to enquire.
