24 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 24th October [1892]. Very busy morning arranging every thing for the party this eveng. Ola went to the Eden’s garden before breakfast to get flowers & I helped her to arrange them. Mr Malcolm also sent us a basketful. I had rather a headache when I got up & it got worse as the day went on. Mrs Dyer & Stella came to luncheon at 1 & at 2 Trombini came to practise with Stella for this evening. I had to leave all & go to bed & slept till 5 when I had some tea & then dressed for dinner. Besides H.M. the Empress Frederick, Princess Margaret & Prince Friederich Carl we had the Spanish Ambr at Rome & Condesa de Benomar, Countess Pisani, Marchesa Guiccioli, Mrs Eden, Mr Brown & Mr Symonds, Baron Knesebeck (H.M.’s ADC), Mr Malcolm, Ola & Miss Cadogan– Miss Sharpe dined upstairs being unable to get more than 16 people at table & she came down afterwards. We had an excellent dinner & a few English came in the evening. We had a trio played by Trombini, Tirindelli & Ct Agostini. The Empress asked the latter if he could do something abt the poor little sick child we saw at the Quattro Fontane & he promises to go & see. Stella played her solo– She is immensely improved in playing but looks very delicate. The Royalties went away directly after Stella had played—as it was nearly 11 & H.M. keeps early hours—& the rest went away soon after– My head was rather better towards the end of the eveng.
