28 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Friday. 28th October [1892]. We breakfasted at 8 & Ethel, Henry & I set off to meet H.M. at the station & accompany her party to Padua. Pss Margaret, Prince F.C. of Hesse & Baron Knesebeck were the rest of the party. We took our servant Paolo to arrange for our lunch there. We left by 9 o’cl train & reached Padua abt 10. We engaged 2 4 seated carriages at the station & I got into one with H.M., Princess Margaret & the Prince, Henry, the Baron & Ethel Cadogan in the other. We drove to the Arena to see the Grotto chapel & then the Eremitani from there we walked to the Santo & there spent a long time as H.M. was most enthusiastically delighted with it—then to S. Giustina where all got out except the Empress & myself– She said the German monk there whom she had met last year had written to her for money to restore the church wh she could not give so she preferred not to see him. From there we drove to the Stella d’oro where Paolo had got lunch prepared for us & we had an excellent meal & a pleasant rest. Afterwards we walked to the University & had a good deal of difficulty in getting in as it is vacation time & we had to go to a back door. Thence to the Palazzo della Raggione & from there we drove to the Cathedral got out of our cabs & walked about. The Empress saw an old brass Venetian inkstand for sale in the street & we bought it for her. She lingered in the Piazza de’ Signore which delighted her much– She said she knew nothing more picturesque. I dived into a dirty iron shop & saw a bronze figure wh I thought was pretty but was at once asked 500 fcs for it so I came away. In the meanwhile Henry had got the Baptistery open for us to see the curious frescoes there– We had then to go off to the station to return to Venice by 3.30 train & were not there many minutes before the time. Got home for 5 o’cl tea–
