29 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 29th October [1892]. Monty Alderson arrived from Ravenna to stay with us. He is now doing tutor to the 2 sons of Count & Css Pasolini and they have given him a holiday. Directly after luncheon, Ethel, Ola & I went out in the vaporetto with H.M., Princess Margaret, Prince Charles & Ct Seckendorff. A lovely day. We went to Malamocco, landed & walked back to S. Elisabetta. I lingered behind with Count Seckendorff & had some very interesting talk with him– He spoke very strongly on the bad conduct of the present Emperor towards his mother & said “mark my words, they can never & will never be friends– The Emperor had hurt her too deeply by his conduct during his father’s illness & at his death– Thirty minutes after he was dead her son telephoned to his regiment to surround the palace in wh he lay & allow no one to leave or enter without his orders.” The next day he told Seckendorff himself he was aware that a packet had been sent off before the Emperor’s death to the English Embassy—at wh Seckendorff said that such had been the case & looked at him as much as to say “and your Majesty condescends to go into such matters”! Seckendorff said that he thought our Queen might have improved matters between the Emperor & his mother only it was a disagreeable topic & they tacitly agreed to avoid it. He said the Empress was the only person who is not afraid of him– She regards him 1st as her son & 2nd as the Emperor—& he would sink the son in the Emperor. It was dark when we got home. Monty Alderson accompanied Stella on the piano in the evening & we had some very pleasant music.
