30 October 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Sunday. 30th October [1892]. Ethel Cadogan, Ola, Miss Sharpe & Monty & I went to church at 10.30. Monty took the organ & played very well indeed. Ola & I came back in gondola together & stopped at Rietti to ask him to see at Padua if a bronze we saw there was worth buying. After lunch we had a visit from old Sir James Lacaita. He had been to lunch at Palazzo Malcolm with the Empress and he came on to us. When I greeted him he said “excuse me but I cannot help it I must kiss you”—& to my surprise gave me a kiss on my cheek. He is staying with the Brownings. At 3.30 Ethel & I went to the afternoon service to wh the Empress & Princess Margaret also came. Monty Alderson played the organ & we had the responses sung. Afterwards we went to the Eden’s garden & the Empress, Pss Margaret & Prince Fr. Ch: also. It was late & the Edens had left but we walked about & left just as it was getting quite dark. Mr Malcolm dined with us & he & Ola took Miss Ethel Cadogan to the station as she left at 11 this evening for London. She is going straight thro’ without stopping & gets to London on Tuesday afternoon– Sir Domenic Colnaghi arrived by 6.30 train to stay with us—& he had to wait for a bedroom until Ethel had left as we had no other room to give him. It was a kind of Box & Cox arrangement.
