12 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Monday. 12th [December 1892]. Mr Passini came at 12 o’cl to begin my portrait and made the first sketch. Henry went at 11 to see Mme Wiel & examine some old pictures she has & wants to dispose of. After lunch Carry Eden called for me & we walked to the Ca’ D’oro to see the furniture wh is to be sold belonging to Lady Colin Campbell. She had taken the 2nd floor & began to furnish it & report says the Duke of Marlboro’ had done it for her & owing to his sudden death the means to live in it is gone. We had to go to get the keys from the V. Consul Mr Zuccato & he came himself & showed it us. I accompanied Carry back to her own house & there met Edith Bronson who was to have come to lunch with us & had forgotten it. I asked her what news her mother had of Prince Gagarin. She said that he was no better & had erysipelas in his legs. Henry & Ola went out the latter to tea with Mme Wiel & on her return told me that she had heard that the Prince was dead. He had been left alone by his servants in the night & in the morng they had found him dead on his face on the ground. We could hardly believe it but when Mr & Mrs Dyer & Stella came to dinner they said they had seen Edith Bronson later than I had & she had sent me this message. Trombini came in the evening & accompanied Stella who played Laub’s Polonaise very well–
