14 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 14th December [1892]. Sat for my portrait in morning. Poor old Gagarin’s funeral service took place at 3. So we sent our gondola & gondoliers with torches to the Greek Church. It is the fashion here to send ones gondoliers with large wax candles– The candles are hired for the occasion—& are weighed when they are taken from the shop & when they are returned & one pays for the wax consumed. The gondoliers with these lighted torches are ranged round the bier—their names are noted down at the funeral & a small buonsmano given to each. Henry & I walked to the Piazza & there met Mrs Eden—& I walked to her house with her. The gondola met Henry at the Piazzetta & he picked me up at the Edens & brought me home. Mrs Hulton came to tea at 5 & also the Miss Wests & then the Dyers. Stella continues to come every afternoon to read aloud to Henry. Fine weather today.
