15 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 15th December [1892]. Sat for my portrait. Out in gondola with Henry. Called on Princess Hohenlohe—an old Austrian lady who comes here for the winter but is delicate & never goes out. She was a great beauty in her day but now is a little dried up old lady with fine manners. She has one unmarried daughter Carola very ugly & with hardly any chin & not very intelligent. I went on to the house opposite (Casa Chiodo) where lodged the Brackett family & paid them a visit. Mrs Brown was also calling & Mr Montalba. There I heard of the death of the French Consul M. Rousset. Less than a year ago I met him & P. Gagarin at the Princess of Montenegro’s & now all 3 are dead. Countess Brandolin & her daughter & M. d’Adda her father came to tea. The latter being here for a day only. Count Belmondo & Mr Woods dined with us.
