21 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 21st December [1892]. I got up to breakfast. Henry had a letter from Mr Burdett Coutts saying there were at Darnelli’s for a short stay—so at 10.30 I went in the gondola with Ola to call on them. They have our old servant Giovanni Merlini with them as courrier. Ola & I shopped & walked to the Grand Hotel to see Mrs Dyer & she told us she had refused the Bronson’s house– I took her to see the rooms at the Hotel de Rome—& she found them too dear– Came home to lunch & did not go out again. The Baroness & Mr Burdett Coutts came to call at 3.30 & stayed till past 5 talking looking at the pictures & having tea. Mme Rombo called just as they were leaving. Stella came & read to Henry but was not very well & coughed a good deal. At dinner Henry talked to Ola & me about Baroness Burdett Coutts whom he had known when she was young. He said he used often to dine à parté carre at her house, her companion Mrs Brown & the Great Duke of Wellington who had at one time wished to marry her. He says he had very interesting talks with the Duke & remembers especially one about the navigation of the Euphrates &c.
