26 December 1892 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Monday. 26th December [1892]. Today we kept our Christmas fête & were very busy. I got up late—having written before I rose & worked at the costumes for the evening. Did not go out. Mr Woods came abt 4 & I helped him to arrange the costumes & put them ready for use– We dined 17 today viz selves 4 (Ola & Monty included), Mr & Mrs Eden, Mr & Mrs Browning & Miss Browning, Mrs Brown & Mr H. Brown, Mr Woods, Mr Montalba & Miss Clara Montalba, Ct & Css Belmondo Caccia & Revd Mr Penrice. Our cook Bertha gave us an excellent dinner. Abt 9.30 the rest of the English Colony arrived & then we had the tableaux wh were very pretty Mrs Hulton & Agostini as Herodias’ daughter with the head of John the baptist, Mrs Fischer as Mme LeBrun painting. Ola in a Titianesque picture holding up a dish of flowers. Mr Reuben a seller of organs. Mr Woods as Franz Hals Burgermaster &c &c. Carisi (the tapeur) played valses on the piano the while. I & Mr Montalba made the punch at supper time– After supper we danced a “Sir Roger” & a few more dances but the company was not numerous to keep it up late & we went to bed at 1. | |
