14 January 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 14th [January 1893]. I wrote all the morning. I went to the Piazza to walk with Henry but the bitter cold drove us in. Henry left me at Ida Belmondo’s & I found her at home & stayed with her a little & thence went to Baroness Oesterreicher’s where there was a tea party to hear Count Morolin play & his pupil the son of a chemist here who is studying for a Dr at Padua sing. He is quite a young man & very small but has a most tremendous voice. There was a great deal of ice in good sized blocks floating about the Giudecca & it was very cold. I came in by tea– My note to Mr Malcolm was returned by Signor Astolfi saying Mr Malcolm was ill in bed & Cini had said he was not to have his letters! Stella came to read to Henry at 5. I practised the harmonium after tea. Dined in studio.
