9 December 1893 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 9th [December 1893]. Nela & I went off at 9.30 to the studio. It was dark & foggy & as we walked home as 12.30 there was a drizzling rain. Practised the guitar before lunch. Did not go out again. Read. Dr & Mrs Thode called at 4. She is very handsome—pleasant & well dressed. To tea Ersilia & Maria Cozzi came—& later were joined by Baroness Hellenbach & her unfortunate daughter Countess Papadopoli who caused such a terrible scandal last year by her intrigue with a worthless creature called Adami. She is now repentant & broken down & I had said I would receive her & try & help her. She looked wretchedly ill & broken down today & hardly dared look any one in the face. Mr Canevaro also called– Pamela returned from Padua in the midst of it all. Iduna Belmondo came to dinner at 7.30 & Henry took her, Pamela & Ola to the Rossini to hear “Pagliacci.” I spent the eveng trying over guitar music with Lina.
