3 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 3rd [January 1894]. The men came to see about making a fireplace in the middle drawing room here on the 1st floor. To our disappointment found that there was a beam in the way so we had to give it up. I went in gondola to the stove man & chose an open stove called a [illegible word]—then went on to the studio & began a small still life. Walked home. Coming out of the Casa Raffaelli in the little calle I met an old man & woman living in a room on the ground floor & gave them my bottle of broth which I had not wanted. I walked home. Did not go out again. Henry went alone. I practised guitar & wrote letters. Read aloud to Henry from Saint Simon’s memoires the death of the bad Dss of Berry. The wind was tremendous all day & it was not easy to get about in gondola—it blows a Bora– After dinner I played duetts with Ola & also the harmonium.
