4 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 4th January [1894]. Went to the studio in the morning in gondola. When I went in to the old woman in the Calle to get my bottle I found she had put it on a high shelf & had mounted on the chair whence she could not move on account of the tremolo in her old legs. I had to go in & take the bottle from her & then get her safely down. I gave her some cold meat which she hugged in her lap & called me “tesoro” & “benedetta.” I walked home. It was very cold & freezing hard. I practised the guitar & wrote letters. Read aloud to Henry. It blew hard all the afternoon & looked very like snow. Played duetts in eveng.
