10 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 10th January [1894]. Mr Neville’s funeral was at 8.30 at the English church & I went to it with Ola & she & I did the responses with the Misses West. There were a good many people & the church was full—& there were many servants bearing torches. Got home for breakfast at 9.30 & then I went back to the studio & worked & returned home for lunch & did not go out again. Henry went out with Ola. I had visits from Miss West, Miss More, Miss Bronson & Mrs Carey came in a state of mind to say a letter had come from Mr Hanson to her husband which in his absence she had opened refusing to have a tea at the sailors institute which had been settled for tomorrow. I had also a queer letter from the same gentleman abt wishing to meet the committee of wh I took no notice– Mrs Carey said the tea would take place all the same as Mr Carey was determined to have it. She promised to let me know in the morning. Ct Marcello came to call to say he & his wife cd not dine with us on Saty as we had asked them. He also informed us that Mr Neville has left our church here 10,000 fcs which is highly satisfactory.
