11 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 11th January [1894]. I went to studio as usual. Edith Bronson came to luncheon & to play the guitar & try over new music. I asked to her if her mother wd have Henry to dinner tonight as Ola & I were going out to the Sailors Institute. When Mrs B came to call for her I went down to her gondola & arranged it with her. Mr Carey came abt 3 to tell me that all was settled & I promised to send Bertha & Roberts at 6.30 & to go there myself at 7. Mrs Hulton came to call. Ola & I had tea at 6.45 in the studio & then went off in the gondola to the Institute. The Careys were already there & M. & Mme Androutzos—a greek with an English wife née Tripp. They had their French poodle with them who was supposed to be going to amuse the sailors by dancing but he eventually proved to be a failure. There were not many men on our arrival but by 8 the room filled up. Capt Leighton was elected chairman & the concert began by Ola & myself on guitar & mandola– Then the men sang different songs comic & serious & some with chorus– At abt 10 we served them tea, cake & plum pudding after wh they smoked & chatted—& at 12 we walked home. There was only one man rather the worse for drink who tried to sing & eventually retired to the drinking shops—all the rest were very well behaved.
