20 January 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Saturday. 20th [January 1894]. Thick fog. Henry stayed in bed till lunch time. I went to the studio & back in gondola. He got up as soon as I returned & was down for luncheon. I went out after lunch in gondola—took the little green parrot back to the Montalbas as it was now in a fit state to go to them being quite tame & quiet. I took the bird on my arm under my cloak & he crept up close to my neck & there he was when I arrived. At first the servant said the Miss Montalbas were not at home so I went off to see the old woman in the lane & gave her some polenta & then returned to the Zattere & the servant let me in to the Montalbas saying she had not recognised me. I intended to have gone to Mr Fisher’s studio from there but gave it up on acct of the fog & went home. Ola went out after tea to see Mme Wiel who has just returned from England. I had visits from Be Hellenbach & her daughter & Be Mayneri & M. G. Cozzi. Read aloud to Henry before dinner.
