24 January 1894 — En route to Naples
Wednesday. 24th [January 1894]. at 7.35 & breakfasted at the station & then went on at 8.20 to Naples. I had taken my little parrot Bibi with me & on the road between Rome & Naples the guard asked if we had paid—on my saying we had not done so he charged us fcs 11.75 from Venice to Naples. We were in the Pullman car in the private compartment & I had taken the bird out on my shoulder—& the guard saw him. Even when we left the station at Naples the ticket collector ran after us for the bird’s ticket. This is the second time that on this line we have been bothered about paying for birds travelling. It happened years ago when I had 2 small averdevats in a tiny cage. We reached Naples about 2 & went to the Grand Hotel where we had ordered rooms. It was pleasant & warm– We saw oranges growing & flowers selling in the streets—& olives & Palms everywhere. Had tea on arriving. Dined at table d’hôte at 7 & bed early.
