1 February 1894 — Naples | |
Thursday. 1st February [1894]. We went to the Museum directly after breakfast & there Profr de Petra found us & we settled with him to go to the scavi at Pompei on Monday next. We went thro’ the sculpture halls & to the papyrus rooms & picture galleries. Came back to the hotel to lunch. After lunch I had a visit from Mr Burroughs the manager of the Sailor’s Rest here which I went to see & arranged with him to go there tomorrow at 11. D. Carlos & Margherita came to call & we told them they shd go with us to Pompei on Monday– I painted a rose in afternoon—& read to Henry before dinner. Vinaccia sent me back my guitar beautifully arranged so that now I can play the softest tones. Revd Mr Baiff the Chaplain here called on me by Capt Hartwell’s desire as we wanted to see the English Church here & I settled to go at 2 tomorrow. After dinner there was so horrible dancing & singing in the hall below fm wh we fled. I practised my guitar while Henry played Patience. | |
