2 February 1894 — Naples
Friday. 2nd February [1894]. After breakfast practised guitar & at ¼ to 11 I drove with Bertha to the Sailor’s Rest & spent an hour talking over the management of it with Mr & Mrs Burroughs. It seemed very nice but too much of the missionary with texts on the walls & Bibles in every direction. The rooms are partitioned off to make more room & they told me they take in poor officers & have now a Capt Coxhead staying there for a very small sum. Came back to luncheon at the hotel & directly after Henry & I walked to the English church where Mr Baiff met us & showed us the meeting room, library & church. It is all built on ground given by Garibaldi & is the old exercising ground of the barracks opposite. We then walked a little in the gardens & went back to the hotel. Practised guitar, read—&c. After the table d’hôte there was some of the worst music I ever heard. Patience.
