5 February 1894 — Naples
Monday. 5th [February 1894]. We left Naples by the 10.30 train & arrived at 11 at Pompei where we were met by Sr Sogliano the Inspector of the Scavi & he led us straight to the excavations. We were accompanied by Senatore Don Carlo d’Adda, his son D. Juan & Signorina Margherita Brandolin his grandchild. We went to a house called the Casa Margherita—a very fine one at the excavation of wh the Queen of Italy had assisted. Nothing turned up there so he led us to another & put 5 men to work. Gave us chairs & there we sat. At first in a painted chamber nothing appeared but some long nails & some bone box hinges– Then we turned to the inner Court where a marble table soon appeared & round it the couches built round it for reclining & soon a large iron brasier having most tiles—& then the cinders & earthen pots which must have been on it being warmed at the moment of the overwhelming of the city– A few chicken bones—a great many bone hinges—fragments of glass & more earthen jars were found afterwards. The time had gone & we had to hurry back to the Hotel Suisse where we got a very good lunch & were very hungry as it was just 4. Then we drove to Torre Central where we took 4.30 train back to Naples– We had had a most enjoyable day– It was very fine coldish & a little windy & very dusty. We dined at 8.15 in the restaurant as the table d’hôte was over.
