26 February 1894 — Rome | |
Monday. 26th February [1894]. We went in the morning to see Dr Nevin & he showed us his house & then took us into the church. One of Burne Jones mosaics has just been put up but the scaffolding has not been removed so we could not see much of it. We returned to the Hotel to lunch. Afterwards Mme de Hurtado came to take me out driving & she took me to see Lady Bagot in her new apartment in the Palazzo Moroni. It is very high up but there is a lift in the house which we used. The rooms are very small but the sun was pouring in. From here we went to an afternoon party at Mme de Westenberg in the Palazzo Bonaparte. There were a good many people there. Mme Westenberg was very kind & welcomed me—but there were not many there that I knew. We dined with the Duke of Sermoneta. His wife was in bed with a rheumatic attack– Nella the daughter did the honours very prettily. Ct & Css Pasolini dined there & Signor Barnabei & there was also a son of the house present who is studying the law. The Duke had to leave at 9.30 as he was bidden by the Queen to a musical soirée. Css Pasolini talked politics violently & loudly at wh Henry & Barnabei laughed at her. The great excitement of the moment is the new Ministry & the coming statements of Signor Sydney Sonnino on the Finances. | |
