27 February 1894 — Rome
Tuesday. 27th February [1894]. I woke with a headache & did not get up till 12. We went to lunch with Donna Laura Minghetti’s at 12.30. Met there her son in law Baron de Bulow, the new German Ambassador, & Mme Ghibezzi & her brother Signor Sydney Sonnino the hero of the moment. Their mother being English they both speak English perfectly & are both very nice. Sr Sonnino is nice looking, youngish, modest & gentlemanly. His hair is beginning to turn grey. He was very pleasant & was hopeful of being able to do some good work. We had some fun telling him how rabid Css Pasolini was against him! After lunch I had to beg to be deposited at the hotel as my head was still bad. Henry went on with Donna Laura to the Villa Borghese to visit Mr Pullen & to see the pictures. I went to sleep till it was time to dress for dinner & then we went to the Grand Hotel to dine with the Burdett Coutts. This is the new Hotel & is fitted up in a most luxurious manner. We found our hosts already seated in the Restaurant. Besides ourselves were only the Duke & Dss of Abercorn– We had an excellent dinner. The room lighted with electric light. On each small table a burner with flowers artistically arranged round it & on the table– The waiters & men in livery seemed legions. A band played all dinner time. There were other parties dining at the same time. At the table next us Mr & Mrs Crawshay & with them Katie Bagot. We went up to the Baroness private rooms after dinner. They were very nice. The Duke & Dss, 2 girls joined us there for a short time– One girl nearly “out” another of abt 10.
