28 February 1894 — Rome | |
Wednesday. 28th February [1894]. Signor Barnabei fetched us at 10 & we drove to the Palatine gates. Got out & walked. He took us by a new road now in progress making round the ruin of the Palace of Septimius Severus which also has lately been opened out & they are wonderfully interesting. It was a splendidly fine day—the sky deep blue & the sun quite hot. One had lovely views thro’ every arch of the ruins. We went to the Stadium which had been excavated last April & one can almost imagine the whole scene. The people in the galleries & the Caesar in his box. By the time we got to the house where we got chairs to rest we were tired & as it was past 12 we got our carriage & drove by the Coliseum back to the hotel & had lunch. They gave me lovely violets grown in the Palatine & it was so delightful one was sorry to come away. It was the first spring day. Signor Barnabei gave me a piece of porphory for a letter weight wh came from the stadium. After lunch we went to the Terme again to meet Signor Barnabei & he showed us some Longobardian gold greaves & horse trappings which have lately been discovered & wh are very fine. They are not yet arranged for exhibition & he took them out of their papers on purpose to show them to us. Css Pasolini & Nella met us there & Ct Rasponi to see these things also. Henry returned to the hotel & dropped me near Lady Bagot’s. I went to see her & bid her adieu & then went on to see the Dss of Sermoneta who is better & up & was very nice & kind to me—& presses me to come to Rome next winter. Returned to hotel, dressed & went to dine with the Hurtados. Met Mr & Mrs John Hay (U.S.) & their daughter. Also Admiral Canevaro. A rather bad dinner– Took leave of the Hurtados & left early. | |
