4 March 1894 — Florence | |
Sunday. 4th March [1894]. Munier came at 10 to give me a lesson & Lina came in for it– He left only at 11.30 too late for me to go to church so I walked with Lina to the Annunciata’s & waited while she heard mass. The church was full & there was a messa cantata just finished. Lina heard mass at a silver altar in abt 10 minutes– Even she was surprised at its being over in so short a time & said she thought the priest had gabbled thro’ it– We returned to the Hotel & all 3 started from there in a cab & went to Poggio Gherardo where we lunched. Walked with Lina in the garden—& sat on the terrace. The weather looks like changing. Played the guitar with Lina to a Mme Turri who came up to Poggio to call. Drove back to Florence at 4. Finding ourselves near the Porta S. Gallo I got out of the cab & went to call on Lady Colnaghi who was at home & later Sir Domenic came in & then Katie & a Mr Ram & 2 daughters & a Mrs Godfrey Pearce, (Grisi’s daughter). Had tea there & then walked back to the Hotel, lost my way & found it again. Fell in with an officers funeral which impeded my progress so I got back after 6. Dined at 7.30. Mrs Howard came & sat at our table & talked to me after she had finished her dinner. | |
