5 March 1894 — Florence | |
Monday. 5th March [1894]. Had a last lesson of Munier who played his mandoline & made one work hard trying over a lot of new pieces which he brought with him. Lina & Mrs Ross came while we were playing. Mr Ross came to wish Henry well on his birthday. At 11 I left Lina copying music & drove with Mrs B. Leigh to Cantagalli’s china factory. He has lovely things & has imitated the Spanish lustre ware very cleverly. On my return to the Hotel went out shopping with Lina & returned to lunch. Olga Mocenigo lunched with us & brought me a lovely bottle set in silver for our silver wedding on 9th. To Henry she gave a silver menu holder. Lina & I went after luncheon to change some music & then Henry took us to have tea at Gracosas—& Lina returned to her home. Henry & I dined at Sir Dom: & Lady Colnaghi’s & met Mr & Mrs Tuckerman (U.S.A.), Sir John Edgar & Mr Davis U.S. Consul. There was music in the eveng & a few people came—amongst them Profr & Mme Villari & Mr Cartwright. The latter had today arrived from London & we were glad to hear abt Gladstone’s resignation. It appears the Old Man has got cataracts & had to give up. Lord Rosebery is to form a Govt but it is thought there will be elections after Easter. Munier played the mandoline most beautifully accompanied on the piano by Katie Colnaghi. There was some singing by different gentlemen. Henry declared that a “drawing room” tenor always got on his nerves & dragged me away in the midst of a song! | |
