7 March 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Wednesday. 7th [March 1894]. Remained in bed all morng to rest. Miss Holas came & gave me a minute acct of Miss Constance Fennimore Woolson. She says the family wish it said that her suicide was an accident in delirium—whereas Dr Cini says no doubt it was premeditated & that she wished him to have given her an over dose of laudanum & so that the fault of her death should fall on his shoulders. She begged for chloral & for morphine & at last he gave her very small doses of laudanum which could not have done her any harm. As it is I found at Florence that the American Dr (Baldwin) lays the blame on Cini as not having understood the case. Ola turned up from Vescovana directly after lunch having come alone– She never got my letter from Florence till this morng tho’ I posted in early on Monday morning. I walked to the Piazza with Katie Colnaghi & went to Missiaglia’s to see if he had a row of pearls wh Henry wants to give me on our silver wedding day. He had 3 nice rows & I brought them to show Henry who to my surprise & delight said he would give me all 3. We left Henry at Mrs Bronson’s having met him in Piazza & came home in the gondola. Ct Canevaro came to tea. Dined at 8 & in evening Katie & I played guitars with Ola’s mandola & tried over new music.
