8 March 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice
Thursday. 8th March [1894]. Henry & I started off after breakfast & walked to the Piazza & spent a long time bargaining for the pearls & also secured an emerald & diamond clasp. Brought home the pearls & restrung them before lunch– After lunch Katie & I went out with Henry first to Rietti’s in search for Lanterns for Lady Vivian who wrote to ask Henry to find some for electric light—then to Palazzo Contarini at Madonna dell’Orto to see Mr Logsdail’s pictures before he sends them to London. He is a youngish man & received us very kindly tho’ we were quite strange to him. He has a picture of a girl feeding pigeons in the piazza—also a man in red cloak of Longhi time—very pretty—walking in the piazza—& many other things. Mrs Logsdail—a pretty modest young woman evidently near her confinement came to us & kindly gave us tea—they live in 2 or 3 rooms of a great unfurnished apartment—& it looks cold & comfortless. The views from the windows are lovely over Murano to S. Francesco in Deserto. In the room there still hung many Contarini portraits—all falling to pieces. It is sad to see it. Came home to tea. Css Canevaro & Maria Cozzi came—also Css Papadopoli who seems to have got over her terrible position & to be living down the scandals she caused. Mr Montalba came to see me. We dined at 7.15. Ola went to Missiaglia & brought the pearl necklace all arranged on the clasp. Henry took her & Katie to Rossini theatre to hear the Barbiere de Siviglia. I remained at home. Had a visit from Profr Trombini who had just heard that tomorrow was our silver wedding day & came to congratulate. I found lovely silver presents here from my mother & sister Blanche when we returned on Tuesday—sent to us from London–
