23 March 1894 — Ca’ Capello, Venice | |
Friday. 23rd [March 1894]. Good Friday. Went to morning service at 10.30. After lunch Katie, Nety & I sat in my bedroom until 4 when the latter, Henry & I went out in gondola– Ola & the 2 Montagus in sandolo. We made a giro round by the Canareggio. We found we had forgotten Katie Colnaghi so we returned home for her & she went for a row with Henry while Nety & I went to church. She & I walked home going round by the Zattere & went into the Gesuati church. There we saw the funeral service being said over a tiny baby’s coffin & also found a figure of the dead Christ in a small chapel arrayed like a tomb & set up where people were praying. Had tea & then read aloud to Henry. Mrs Hulton came to tea. Played Halma with Nety in eveng. | |
