6 April 1894 — Bâle
Friday. 6th April [1894]. Left Bale at 9.13. Lunch at Belpre. Dined at Reims at 7. Arrived at Amiens at 11. Slept at Hotel du Rhin. There was a funny little old gentleman in our train who kept walking up & down the next compartment to us & wiping his head violently with his handkerchief. He spoke to me at Reims & asked if we came from the medical congress at Rome & if my husband was also a Dr. He seemed disappointed when I said he was not & added that he (the old gentleman) has been very ill at Reims & had suffered from breathlessness. He said he was going to sleep at Boulogne on his way to London. It made me nervous to see him rushing up & down as I could do so through the little peep hole from one compartment to the other & I was glad to leave the train at Amiens. We went to bed at once—& it is comfort to think we are so near the end of our journey.
