19 April 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Thursday. 19th April [1894]. Ethel Cadogan came to call & offer to come & dine tonight—as we were going to the Play I asked her to come tomorrow instead. I ordered the carriage at 3 to drive with Maria but as I wanted to wait to see the Dr & then had not come then I sent her the carriage & asked her to come back for me at 4 which she did & we went to leave cards on the Salisburys & Devonshires. The Dr did not say anything much to me after all—as nurse seemed to think they would from what she overheard them say yesterday. Blanche sent round to me to ask me to go to 17 Cavendish Sqr to see Mama who was very low. I found she was in a fidget abt a concert of Thomas the harpist to which she had given up going. After sitting with her a while I came home & dressed to go to the Play. Mr Herbert Thompson dined with Auga Gregory & her nephew young Lane who is an employé of Martin Colnaghi’s. We went to the Criterion Theatre to see “An Aristocratic Alliance” a translation from the French by Lady Violet Greville & acted by Wyndham & Mary Moore. They did their parts very well but the play is not good the whole thing is laboured & heavy & not done with a delicate touch. There is also some absurd lovemaking between a Captain & a young lady which has nothing to do with the original play & is very stupid.
