21 April 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 21st April [1894]. I had very broken sleep last night but was up as usual. Nety Montagu & Olga came to see us having returned to England last night—& are gone down to Wherwell Priory Andover this afternoon. We had much to say to each other. Mrs Bagot came to lunch with me & was full of gossip & scandal as usual. At 3 I sent her out in the carriage to see Maria & to tell them to go out driving & return for me at 5 as I was anxious to see the Drs (Mr Herring & Sir Henry Thompson). They came soon after 3 & after visiting Henry they came down to the morning room & Sir Henry Thompson told me that Henry’s malady had rather increased than otherwise & therefore they wished to have another opinion & he would like to call in Sir James Paget. He said my family was large & he thought they would wish this. At all this my heart sank lower & lower & all my first fears are returning to me– I said I put myself entirely in Sir Henry’s hands & wished to do as he said. They returned to tell Henry who acquiesced & so it is settled. He was evidently impressed by the affair & said to Nurse—“I think this is going to finish me”– I dont know what to think of it & am horribly low & miserable. If only we had not to wait until Monday for the consultation. It seems so far off! Maria & one of her twins came back for me at 5 & I went out for a drive with them in the Park. I was to have joined Augusta Gregory at tea time at Lady Lindsay’s but was so out of spirits I cd not attempt it—so came home & then sent the carriage for her.
