23 April 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Monday. 23rd April [1894]. In order to get thro the day I set to work to move abt. I walked with Augusta to Phillips in Bond St & Foster’s in Pall Mall to look at 2nd hand furniture which is to be sold this week. She wants a little furniture for her new rooms– Then I went to Blanche & took her in a hansom to Rigals to settle abt my new dresses. Came home to lunch & sat with Henry who expecting the Doctors at 5 did not get up till they had gone. Sir Henry came first & I gave him some tea. Then Mr Herring came & soon after came Sir James Paget. He just came into the drawing room & then they went up to Henry. Augusta had been out to lunch but she came in to tea & sat talking to me all the time we were awaiting the result of the consultation. At last after a long time they came & Sir James took up his parable & said the result of it was so far good that they saw no reason to think there was anything malignant & that the swelling had not disappeared as a former one had done. At last the result was satisfactory. He did not stay long & then Sir Henry spoke & said he was very glad to have Paget’s opinion & he had suggested a treatment wh they would try from tomorrow– I could hardly believe that the weight may be lifted from my head. But Sir Henry began to talk abt taking Lady Gregory & me to a play this week. In the meanwhile nurse came to beg Sir Henry to go up to Henry & he came back to me to say they had forgotten to go & tell the patient the result of the consultation & how satisfactory it was & he told me I had every reason to be cheered. At this I rather broke down—& he went away. Henry got up & came to lie on the sofa in my bedroom & I went in & told him how glad I was—& then Augusta took me out for a walk. It was drizzling but we walked to Half Moon St. Nelly was out but I left her a message with the good news & also went for a moment to give it to Blanche & then came in & sat with Henry at his dinner. After dinner Augusta & I sat with him & I found him very low & had much difficulty in cheering him but I think I did so before he went to sleep—& I went to bed myself—tired out–
