1 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Tuesday. 1st May [1894]. I got up at ¼ to 8 & went in to Henry. He had had a good night—but had a good deal of pain in course of the morning. At last nurse got him to lie flat & he got better. Mrs Webb (nee Lyall) came to lunch. Abt 3.30 Sir Henry Thompson came to see Henry & examined the tumour—& then came in to my room & with a grave face told me he thinks it is increased since he saw it last week with Paget—& that he does not like his having so much pain. I was terribly discouraged & alarmed but must keep up. It is dreadful. In this state of mind I had a visit from Mrs Sydney Glyn & had to talk nothings to her– I had sent Augusta & Nela out driving & they came back for me. I left Nela with Henry & Augusta & I drove & walked a little afterwards– Mr Sydney Colvin came to see Henry & also Alice & Hallam Murray. Mr Herring came later & I had a long talk with him & tho very kind I can see he is losing heart—but he urges me to be brave. Mr Rate came to see Henry. Mrs Rate came this morng having just returned from Florence with her Enid who was sent abroad for her lungs– I went to dine at Lord Selborne & Sophy Palmer’s– Met Lady Edward Cavendish, Lord Stanmore, M. de Frankville—Sir Edward Bradford, Mr J. Talbot & Miss Octavia Hill who was very interesting & told me a great deal abt the London poor– Augusta dined with Nela & sat with Henry in eveng & I sent her in the carriage to take up her abode in her apartment in Queen Anne Mansions– Shall miss her very much.
