2 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Wednesday. 2nd May [1894]. Did not have a very good night being nervous & worried– Was called as usual at 7. Nurse brought me a cup of tea & I went in & sat with Henry for half an hour before dressing. Henry had the barber to come & cut his hair before he got up. He was comfortable in bed and so remained there & would not get up till after lunch– I tried to occupy myself painted a little & then Nela read aloud to me while I worked. Alice Murray came to luncheon & left directly after to go to a Browning reading at the Farrar’s with Maria. Nela & I drove out together just after 3 & went to change books at Cawthorns’ & to see Mrs Rate. I found her just going out & saw her only for a moment. She gave me a large bunch of cowslips & blue bells for Henry. We picked up Alice & Maria & went to the Lord Chamberlain’s office to get a presentation card for Nela as I have promised to take her to the last drawing room after Whitsuntide if Henry is well eno’. Then left Alice & Nela at the Imperial Institute & then came home. At the Imp: Institute there were gay doings—an Art Exhibition but my heart was too heavy for me to want to go in. However Henry seems better this afternoon– He got up at 3 & I left him comfortably on the sofa in my room when I went out & on my return found him still well & not suffering. Maria & I had tea & put up the flowers Mrs Rate had given me– Ivor called to see Henry & we all sat in his room. Mr Herring called about six & found Henry rather better wh was cheering—& said whatever it was—it is slow” which gave me a little courage. I went at 7 to see Mama & sat with her a little while. Read to Henry both before & after dinner– Dined alone with Nela & sat with Henry who continued better.
