4 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Friday. 4th May [1894]. Henry had a good night & was cheerful when I went to him at 7.30. We had a telegram from Venice from Zuccato at breakfast asking him to recommend him (Z) to the P&O Co so he dictated a letter & we sent Roberts into the City with it & sent him to the Banker Glyn to get some money for the household expenses. Nela read aloud to me while I worked & dried my hair after Bertha had washed it for me. Augusta came to lunch. Maria came to see us in the morning & again just before dinner. At 2 Mr Herring came to see Henry & examine the tumour wh he had not seen since the day Paget was here. He tells me he does not find much difference & does not think it has increased except in one spot which is what he expected & he believed it would even expand still more & altho’ he did not wish to “buoy me up with hope” he thought it might came right in the end & he hoped to be able to have him carried downstairs before long. With this straw of hope held out to me I was able to pluck up heart a little & drove off to the R.A. Private View with Augusta & Nela & Julia Du Cane. Saw a good many people I knew. Watts has a very fine picture called “for he had many possessions.” Gilbert a monstrous design for a monument to the Duke of Clarence. We got away at 4.30. Drove Augusta to Grosvenor Place & came home. Had tea & sat with Henry & told him abt the R.A. Just as we were leaving the R.A. today Lecky arrived there & made his way to me to tell me he had just come from paying Henry a visit. It is very nice & kind of him & he is so gentle & good! Blanche came to see Henry & begged me to go & see Mama which I did at 7. Blanche is worried at the difficulties of combining the 2 menage as Edward is overworked & harrassed. I am trying to get them to take in Maria’s old governess, Miss Sharp to be a sort of companion to Mama– Augusta Gregory & Mr Herbert Thompson came to dinner & sat with Henry in the eveng. He has been better all day & has had no pain since yesterday morng.
