5 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 5th May [1894]. Henry continues better & was able to sit up for his breakfast but complained of a pain in his chest & announced that he had inflammation of the lungs. We persuaded him that he had a muscular pain. He got up at 11 & came into my bedroom to the sofa. I sat with him till lunch time writing while he dozed & Nurse went out. Mrs Rate came to luncheon & sat afterwards with Henry till at 3 Nela & I drove her to her home– Just at lunch time Edward & B looked in & I had a few words with him about making a new arrangement abt Mama & having Miss Sharp to help Blanche. After dropping Mrs Rate we drove on to Q. A. Mansions & picked up Lady Gregory– Left cards on the Leckys & went on to the Amateur Art Exhibition at the Imperial Institute. There were crowds there. The Pss of Wales was there & my sister Constance showing her cousin Mr Maxwell Lyte who was in charge of the pictures for sale begged me to remain & support her wh I did. The Princess said a few words to me in passing just that she had seen my things (a piece of work & a sketch Connie had seized & carried off). Connie told her Henry was ill so she came back to tell me how sorry she was & how she hoped he would soon be better– I spoke to the 2 Princesses & Miss Knowles & showed them Hallam Murray’s sketch which happened to be close to us. They then left & we hurried home leaving Lady Gregory to pay a visit. On getting home found my sister Kate had arrived. Henry had had a great many visitors. Kate & I walked round to Wimpole St to see Lady Thompson & found her & her son together. Came home– Kate went on to Mama. Maria came to see me & sat with me while I dressed to go & dine with Ct & Css Lutzow. Dull dinner. Sir Reginald Brownle took me down & I sat next our host. There was also there Miss Dennison (Bss’s daughter), Lady Inglefield, Lady Violet Branchamp, Capt & Miss Drummond, Mr Bowring. I left early to return to Henry & found him just gone to bed. I went & sat with Kate in her room & made tea wh we drank together.
