12 May 1894 — 1 Queen Anne Street
Saturday. 12th May [1894]. Henry got up abt 12 & the Ilkley couch came just in time & he liked it & found it comfortable. Stella Dyer called in to see him for a few moments in the morning to say they wd dine tonight. Wrote letters. Played guitar. Drove out with Nela after lunch. Went to see Blanche Lady Lindsay & found her at home. There met Theresa Lady Shrewsbury. She was full of Lady Waterford’s illness. She was suddenly found to have internal cancer & had to have an operation at once which may save her for a few months. She is going on well & has no pain & sings & is most cheerful. She wrote her own bulletin herself the first morng after the operation. Lady S. says that when Lady W. was first told her state she was thoroly miserable for ½ hour & after that she cheered up bravely. She says she only feels the parting with her husband. This & Lady Clarendon’s sudden death for an operation makes me feel how thankful I ought to be to think Henry is no worse at present. I drove also to see Lady Thompson– When I returned to tea I found Genl Sir Collingwood Dickson sitting with Henry. He came down to the drawing room & had tea with me & told me all abt Lady Dickson’s last illness & death. Maria came & Ola & I walked home with her & then Ola & I took a walk in the Portland Pce Gardens. I went a moment to see Mama & then hurried home to dinner. Mr & Mrs & Stella Dyer dined with us, & sat with Henry in eveng.
